Richard is a 1981 graduate of the Kent School of Social Work at the University of Louisville. He has an advanced licensure from the National Association of Social Workers, as a Board Certified Diplomate (BCD), and from The National Association of Managed Care Providers, as a Board Certified Diplomate in Managed Care.

 

Having been a therapist and clinical supervisor at the Jefferson Alcohol and Drug Abuse Center for eight years, Mr. Coomer was instrumental in the founding of the local Adult Children of Alcoholics Organization Al-A-Non Programs in Louisville, Kentucky. He served as President elect for the Kentucky Adult Children of Alcoholics Organization after serving on the founding sub-committee for the establishment of the National Association For Children of Alcoholics. He helped establish community services for children of alcoholics, ages 6 to 18. The Children's Alcohol Prevention Program was awarded a national award from Washington, DC, as one of the outstanding prevention programs in the country. Seven County Services honored Richard's achievements by being one of the original receivers of their Outstanding Service Awards.

 

While clinical director for five years at The Family Place: A Child Abuse Treatment Agency, he worked to help establish community standards for the treatment of victims of sexual abuse and those who offend against them. His knowledge in this area is unsurpassed in our community.

 

Mr. Coomer has worked part time in his private practice for the last twelve years focusing on the needs of the gay, lesbian, and bisexual community. He was one of the original founders of the gay and lesbian hot line in the early 1980's. Richard has worked with the HIV and AIDS community for the last fourteen years, and served on the Kentucky AIDS Task Force for two and a half years. Mr. Coomer is also well known for providing training at both local and national conferences and workshops. For the last three years, Mr. Coomer has practiced full time in the private sector.

In addition to his full professional schedule, Mr. Coomer has always found time for the arts. Mr. Coomer has been a manager with The Kentucky Center for The Arts for the last fourteen years, helping to establish and maintain their volunteer program. He served on the Associates Board for Actors Theater for three years. As an Associate Board Member for Shakespeare in Central Park, he aided in the renovation of the C. Douglas Ramey Amphitheater.

 

Counseling services include: Individual therapy for children and adults, family therapy, couple therapy and group therapy.

Areas of expertise include: chemical dependency, sexual abuse, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, relationships, life-stage issues, parenting, child behavior concerns, chronic illness, men's issues, HIV-AIDS, lesbian and gay issues such as coming out.

 

Workshops and consultations are experiential in nature and all focus on building of individual skills. Topics are varied and presentations are tailored to suit your individual needs.
