About Me and the Polymath WebSite

I have recently completed the Master of Arts in Teaching program at the Secondary Education Department of the University of Louisville. I I have a Social Studies Area of concentration and a Math Teaching Minor and I've just now started a teaching position that will allow me to apply some of the creative ideas to help High School kids learn, at Central High School Magnet Career Academy, Louisville, KY. I have also been a Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor for about thirteen years, about eleven of that at the Jefferson Alcohol and Drug Abuse Center (JADAC) in Louisville. I am also a husband, father, friend, and lover of life. (Not necessarily in that order all the time.)
I want this Web Site to become a place to share something of myself in each of these areas. Perhaps some of the resources and thoughts I place here may be of some interest or help to you. But mostly I want to share some of my passion for life and for a broad perspective, rather than specialization.
Here is some basic information about my background, etc. You can contact me by e-mail at ellisb@aye.net.

Education

It seems that most of my life has been spent being educated.

Following kindergarten at the Pickens First Baptist Church, I continued my education in the Pickens County School District, Pickens, S.C., graduating from Pickens High School, where I was salutatorian.

I continued on to Furman University, Greenville, South Carolina, with a broad liberal arts education, that included Religion, Psychology, History, and some wonderful experiences in Music.

(Some people are impressed when I tell them a fraternity brother, Keith Lockhart, is now the conductor of the Boston Pops.
My daughter is more impressed that I sat next to Amy Grant in Ancient History at eight o'clock in the morning. I'm personally impressed more by memories of some great times, and a solid base for learning and enjoying life.)

Then, it was on to The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, here in Louisville, KY, where the education was nowhere near as broad. Actually, the pastoral counseling courses and the exposure to people of intellect and conscience, such as Glen Hinson, Dale Moody, Clyde Francisco and others, have added to my abilities through the years. (I'm one of those who is careful to say I was there before the current ethically bankrupt Calvinist administration.)

More recently, The University of Louisville has provided me with a strong background rounding out my Social Studies and Mathematics qualifications, and the SCHOOL OF EDUCATION has prepared me well to meet the challenges and opportunities of teaching high school in Kentucky at a time of change and reform. Some of the best experiences came in my student teaching at South Oldham High School in Crestwood, KY. The teachers and staff there both allowed me room to experiment with some different approaches and showed me some fine examples of good teaching that comes with years of experience. I am now beginning an exciting time teaching Mathematics at Central High School Magnet Career Academy, Louisville, KY.

Scattered over the last sixteen years have been many trainings, conferences, seminars, and workshops in the field of Chemical Dependency. I have had the opportunity to learn from some of the best in areas such as group therapy, working with adults and teenagers, and family counseling.

Experience

In 1982, I went to work at Pleasant Grove Hospital, which has since become Ten Broeck Hospital. There, I received enough training and experience to become certified as a C.C.D.C. (Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor). I have continued in professional development and I am currently a Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor. (CADC)

I was a counselor at Jefferson Alcohol and Drug Abuse Center (JADAC) from August, 1988, to this fall (1999). I have worked with a variety of people in the roles of counseling, case management, treatment planning, and education. Among my accomplishments has been an ongoing involvement in planning and implementing the educational aspect of our program. I hope to remain involved to some degree in that field which has been so rewarding to me.

Memberships

(and certifications)
I have been certified as a C.C.D.C. since 1986. At the beginning of 1997, our certification is now a C.A.D.C. (Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor) to reflect more current terminology as well as the legislative recognition of our professional field.

I am a member as well of the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics).

Family, etc.

Probably the most important part of my life, certainly the most important job of my life. I am married, and have two daughters and a son. Flexibility is the key to that job. When I get time, we'll have a family page here. (I've been saying that for the past two years. When do you ever get time?
