New Goals for Mathematics Students

Education reform has largely focused on new goals for students. The following are from the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics, March 1989, from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. On each corresponding page there are Web resources and some collections of our own work which may help you in your effort to help students reach these goals.
      Learning to Value Mathematics
Becoming Confident in One's Own Ability
      Becoming a Mathematical Problem Solver
      Learning to Communicate Mathematically
      Learning to Reason Mathematically
"In summary, the intent of these goals is that students will become mathematically literate. This term denotes an individual's ability to use a variety of mathematical methods effectively to solve problems. By becoming literate, their mathematical power should develop."
