NASA scientists have picked up a faint radio signal from the Pioneer 10 spacecraft, 7.5 billion miles from Earth on its way out of the Solar System. The craft, launched in 1972 (not 1974, as indicated in the story), was the first, along with its sister probe Pioneer 11, to traverse the Asteroid Belt, which was previously considered by some an insurmountable obstacle to exploration of the outer Solar System. The probe sent back some amazing images of Jupiter .
No signal from Pioneer 11 has been received since 1995.
