clueless on korea
One of the background elements, of course, on Bush's Iraq obsession is the notion that this Administration is wholly unprepared to deal with any nation it can't either bribe or threaten with America's preeminent military might. Hot on the heels of Secretary of State Colin Powell's failure to persuade Asian nations to adopt the US outlook with regard to North Korea comes news that Pyongyang has, as threatened, restarted a nuclear reactor mothballed under the 1994 "Agreed Framework." The reactor can produce plutonium that could lead to an increase in North Korea's nuclear arsenal in a matter of months. This action is only the latest in a series of actions by Pyongyang to heighten a crisis the US is reluctant to acknowledge. Indeed, it could be argued that Bush has exacerbated the problem with its bellicose rhetoric prompting even more paranoia from Pyongyang's Stalinist dictator.
