We use a Winsock based TCP/IP program that allows two players to connect to each other and play a
graphical game of Chess. The interface of the program is very much like popular Windows Chess
programs, except that you're playing against a real person instead of a computer! There are two popular
programs out now:

They are called WsChess and IRCChess.

   How These Winsock Programs Work

WsChess and IRCChess are TCP/IP Winsock compatible Chess Interfaces, meaning that the two
programs can connect to each other without the need for another computer such as a Game Server or
IRC server. They are a direct computer to computer connection. You don't have to rely on a
frequently lagged computer to play! But, you have to know the others internet address, not an E-mail
address, but the persons internet mask or location on the net. This is only an IP address such as
123.456.789.101. That's where an IRC channel like #Chessmasters comes in. #Chessmasters is a
meeting place to find people to play Chess using these programs. The procedure for this is relatively
easy to learn and the operators or other players can teach people how to connect.

WsChess 99J

WsChess is great program! Besides allowing two people to connect to each other to play, WsChess allows other people to watch the game in progress. There is also a chat box for the players and the observers to chat with each other to discuss the game.
It doesn't take alot of windows resources to use. Once you get WsChess downloaded you might want to read the installation instructions and operation FAQ.

WsChess is a 176K program.

IRCChess 1.20

IRCChess is also a very nice Chess program. It has all the features of WsChess but also includes:

     * Teaching Mode
     * Resizable Chess Board and Chat Window
     * The ability to calculate ratings based on performance.

IRCChess is a little shy of a Meg in size.
