The local sport touring mailing list is maintained by listmeister Jeff Sauer, JCSauer@aol.com. It has evolved from a group of riders who shared e-mails into a regular mailing list. It currently has 170 members, most but not all of whom are in the Louisville area. There are no fees, and to join you simply need to send a message to Jeff asking to subscribe. While there are no written guidelines, the following general principles seem to apply:
Be friendly.
Sign your actual name.
Post stuff you wouldn't mind having your mother read; i.e., use restraint.
There are no restrictions on type of bike, or even owning a bike. We have people who own Honda's, BMW's, Ducati's, Harleys, Triumphs, sport bikes, cruiser, sport touring bikes, dual sport bikes, and some who just drive cages but like bikes.
Many of the active list participants are also members of the Louisville BMW Riders, but there is no requirement that you join the club (although we may encourage you to do so).
The general emphasis is on sport touring, but that is by happenstance only. Kneepuck scrapers and boulevard cruisers are equally welcome.
Some of the subscribers have ridden for more than 30 years and some are new riders. Newer riders are encouraged to subscribe and participate.
The list was originally supported by a few riders who donated toward the very modest host charges from Iglou, the ISP. Presently, the Louisville BMW Riders pay the ISP charges. There is no financial affiliation with any business.
We have never un-subscribed anybody, although we reserve the right to do that if anyone's posting becomes a problem.
Politics, religion, and helmet laws are avoided as topics of discussion.
The list is often used to organize informal rides. These rides have no official status of any kind; it's just a list member who sets it up for his or her individual convenience and enjoyment.
Participants are encouraged to post material, but there is no requirement to do so and some people just read the messages. Trip reports are especially popular.
How to subscribe. Simply send an e-mail to Jeff Sauer at the address above, asking to be put on the mailing list. There are no membership restrictions or tests and Jeff will add you to the list. Unlike some mailing lists, you write the listmeister, Jeff, a real human being, rather than sending an e-mail to a computer to subscribe.
