Roads and Rides
Members' Favorite Roads -- a listing of individual roads from list members -- this represents the composite experience of a number of riders from the LBMWR. If you're not familiar with riding in Kentucky, or even if you are, be sure to check this page out. It lists individual roads which are noteworthy; the loop route section below lists complete trips.
Indiana Sportbike Roads -- from a site which lists the best twisties in each state
Country Stores -- always a favorite destination; here's a bunch of them
Loop rides, suggested by list members.
Jeff's Gratz Ride -- an "afternoon ride" (for those on a Dos Equis CBR1100XX)
Curt's Southern Indiana Rides -- 170 mile and 220 mile rides on the sunny side
Larry's New Mexico Roads -- a little outside our area, but they sound great
Jeff's Wolf Creek Loop (KY 228) -- down in Meade Co.
Bell's Ridge Loop -- a twisty loop in Trimble and Carroll Counties
Patrick's New Middletown Ride -- a Friday p.m. special, with a buffalo farm, too
Skyline Drive -- a local twisty favorite just across the bridge
Other rides will be added by the webdrudge or as they are suggested by others. Post a ride to the list or send it by e-mail to Jim.
A Note on Maps
Maps can be helpful or even necessary in following some of the routes outlined here. Some basic information concerning the map resources available for Kentucky and Southern Indiana motorcycling follows.
DeLorme. DeLorme makes excellent atlases for Kentucky and Indiana both. These show good detail, and present all the state roads clearly. They are less than perfect for showing county roads and country lanes, and do not distinguish between paved and unpaved surfaces.
Kentucky county maps. C.J. Puetz publishes a widely available atlas of county maps. These maps are of very high quality and are invaluable for navigation on small country roads. They show excellent detail, including many streams, churches, and cemeteries. These maps clearly distinguish paved from unpaved surfaces.
Indiana county maps. C.J. Puetz also publishes an Indiana county atlas. Unfortunately, it is inferior to the Kentukcy version. Much information is missing, such as road names, and the maps have less detail.
Kentucky highway maps. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet produces excellent, standard sized road maps of the entire state. These are available at interstate welcome rest areas, and show most of the roads which provide good quality motorcycling. Free.
Local map sources. LaBelle Gallery, in downtown Louisville on Liberty, carries a very broad range of local maps, including much more than those listed above. For the DeLorme and Puetz atlases, Hawley-Cooke in Louisville and Joseph-Beth in Lexington also stock them.
