Drydock Route -- 30 Miles

Note: This route does not start in Waddy, but instead begins east of Taylorsville Lake.

Highway 44 bisects Anderson County, running west to east. The roads south of this highway, which are also south of the Salt River, tend to be more steep ridgetop roads, and the area is even more remote than the northern part of the county. Following is a description of a 30 mile route in the southern part of the county.

Drydock Route -- General. This is a thirty mile route which starts in eastern Anderson County, with access from Taylorsville on KY 248. It's quite hilly, with some good views, and also quite remote. There is a store on KY 53. The route starts in the eastern part of the county, and runs clockwise, staying between KY 44 on the north and the Bluegrass Parkway on the south. There is one store on this route.

Drydock Route -- Access. Southeast of Taylorsville and Taylorsville Lake, KY 248 narrows from a four lane road down to a virtual country lane, and heads over toward US 62. Perhaps a mile after the road narrows dramatically is the Liberty Christian Church, which has a large parking lot. Start here.

An Important Note. This route is relatively easy to follow if you have a copy of the Anderson County map and a compass. The county map is very accurate and shows all the intersections, as well as churches. If you lack a map, you'll probably have a problem. I also recommend a compass as it almost always resolves your uncertainty at those unmarked country lane intersections. This route has several unmarked intersections, so pay attention or you'll end up in Hoophole. If you don't like reading maps, don't try this route unless you like random adventure and look forward to knocking on doors.

Drydock Route -- Details

Start at the Liberty Christian Church on KY 248, southeast of Taylorsville Lake.

Go northwest on KY 248, back toward the lake.

Go straight past Vaughn Rd., a gravel road you will pass on the left.

Turn left (north) at the next paved road, Burgin Rd. (no sign here).

Turn right (south) on KY 53 at stop sign; stay on this road briefly.

Turn left (east) on Dennis Road. Follow this pretty ridgetop road to Drydock, where several roads intersect.

Stay right at intersection with Anderson City road, continuing east.

Go straight at intersection with Drydock Rd (on your left), again continuing east.

Turn right (southwest) on US 62 at the stop sign. This is Fox Creek. Stay on this road briefly.

Turn right (west) on KY 749 at stop sign.

Turn left (south), just past Goshen Church, on Goshen Rd.

Go left (south) at T intersection; unmarked.

Go right (west) at crossroads in Ballard on Puncheon Creek Rd.

Go left at stop sign at KY 53. Climb up the hill past Mt. Pleasant Church.

Store at hilltop!

Turn left (southwest) onto Mays Road (unmarked and confusing intersection).

Bear right (southwest), staying on Mays Rd (do not turn onto Mill Rd.)

Turn right (north) on KY 1291 -- no more hard routefinding after this point.

Turn left (west) on US 62; note school on your right. Continue briefly on US 62.
