Groucho
Marx was a huge proponent of the 1st Amendment as was blatantly obvious
every time he opened his mouth. Groucho's comments never went unoticed!
A few actions and sarcastic remarks aimed at the wrong people were taken
seriously by the paranoid eye of the FBI and he was under their watch for
years to come.
He was in favor of the development of friendly relations with the Soviet
Union during the cold-war. This fact brought attention to the comedian
in 1953 when he was thought to be a communist sympathizer by the FBI. The
FBI said that Groucho made comments in the Communist Party newspaper "The
Daily Worker" in 1934. The paper claims Groucho asked for support
for the Scottsboro Boys who were touting a "Soviet America".
He was also accused of defending Tom Mooney who was a labor leader imprisoned
and then pardoned for the bombing deaths of 10 people. During the 40's
Groucho was present at a benefit concert for Soviet war relief. He also
co-sponsored a fund raiser for a liberal magazine "The Nation".
He was also a member of the committee for the 1st amendment, which was
an organization opposed to the House Un-American Activities Committee.
To make all this even more absurd one of Groucho's closest friends Charlie
Chaplin was banished from this country because he was thought to be
a communist sympathizer.
Groucho Marx was a man way ahead of not only his peers, but of his time.
He was, I believe a humanitarian who wanted the best for all people. During
the paranoia of the cold war the FBI was worried about everything, but
how in the world could they accuse one of America's greatest loved comedians
of betraying the country that he loved so much, the country that had helped
him become one its Cultural Icons. Groucho a Communist? I think not!
Can you imagine what an Incredible country this could have been with
Groucho Marx as President and Charlie Chaplin as Vice-President.
We only need to watch "Duck Soup" to
see the likes of it. HAIL FREEDONIA!
