Bridgette & Spike American Kestrel

Bridgette
(left, above)

Name: No reason
Date in: 5/20/94
Hatched: Spring 1994
Gender: Female
Age at arrival: Four to five weeks
Came from: Cropper, Kentucky

Story: Bridgette was hit by a car as a fledgling. Her left wing was broken, as were her left leg and shoulder. Her right shoulder was dislocated and she is blind in her left eye. She was found by a fifth grader that had seen one of our programs at his school. Bridgette was hit in front of his home and he called us. She cannot fly well enough to take care of herself. She has a very aggressive personality and tends to fight with other Kestrels in her cage. She has never fostered a chick.

Spike
(right, above)

Name: No reason
Date in: 6/17/95
Hatched: Spring 1995
Gender: Male
Age at arrival: Four to five weeks
Came from: Louisville, Kentucky

Story: Spike was found sitting on top of a car at a car lot on 22nd street in Louisville. He had been hit by a car and the metacarpals (similar to our fingers) in one of his wings had been crushed. This prevents him from flying competitively.

Greta
(not shown)

Name: No reason
Date in: 7/2/89
Hatched: Spring 1989
Gender: Female
Age at arrival: Four to five weeks
Came from: Louisville, Kentucky

Story: We beleive that Greta was hit by a car. Her shoulder was dislocated and while she can fly she is not capable of flying well enough to survive. She has served as a foster mother since the age of three and in 1996 she fostered 24 chicks. She lays eggs every spring and protects both the eggs and the foster chicks like an avian wildcat. Any visible piece of skin is a target if you enter her cage while she is fostering.
