Eastern Screech Owls
Squeaky
(shown)
Name: Named because of the loud squeaky noise he made as a 3 day
old chick begging for food.
Date in: 4/25/89
Hatched: April 1989
Gender: Male
Age at arrival: 3 days
Came from: Otter Creek Park
Story: Squeaky was pushed from the nest by his siblings, but not before they had chewed a toe almost completely off. Birds lay their eggs in a staggered order skipping a few days between each. The older stronger birds will often push the younger ones out of the nest or cannibalize them (Survival of the fittest). He was 3 days old when we received him. He was determined to be non-releaseable due to his handicap (which would not have been so had he been an older, established bird) and was therefore hand-raised and imprinted. He has served as a surrogate father since he was 3 years old and raised 15 chicks in 1995 and 19 in 1996.
Name: Because being a wild raised bird, she would puff up every time
humans approached her.
Story: Puff was found in the middle of St.Andrews Church Road with a bloody beak and mouth and a broken wing. It is presumed she was hit by a car. We don't know how old Puff is because she had adult plumage when we received her. She is very aggressive because of being wild raised. She shares a cage with Squeaky but they show no interest in one another.
